What to Bring to a Hot Spring (Resort vs Wild)
The same gear that makes resorts relaxing can ruin a primitive soak, and vice versa. Use this split packing list to avoid overpacking or forgetting essentials.
Resort must-haves
- Slip-resistant sandals—most decks ban outdoor shoes but require footwear between pools.
- Two towels: one for the deck, one for the locker. Cotton robes soak up sulfur smells; synthetic robes rinse easier.
- Water bottle and electrolyte packets—mineral pools dehydrate fast even in winter.
Wild pool kit
- Dry bag with swimsuit, micro towel, headlamp, and emergency layers. Expect wet crossings.
- Small shovel or collapsible bucket to adjust rock dams without damaging existing walls.
- Trash bags and wag bags. Pack extra for strangers; it keeps pools open.
Shared essentials
- Flip-flops or Crocs for walking on slick algae-covered rocks.
- Portable thermometer if you’re unsure about temps—especially with kids.
- First-aid kit with burn gel, ibuprofen, and blister care.
