Tolovana Hot Springs is a remote Alaska backcountry soak in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, about 35 air miles west of Fairbanks — a hand-built private cabin operation accessed only by a 10-mile trek over snow (winter) or boggy tundra (summer). Three private outdoor cedar soaking tubs sit beside small cabins on a hillside in the White Mountains National Recreation Area. Renters pay $70/person/night for cabin use, which includes the outdoor tubs. Winter is the marquee season — aurora viewing from the tubs at -30°F is the actual product. Summer is buggy, mosquito-heavy, and a much harder slog.
What to expect
Reserve cabins months ahead with the operator. Drive to the Tolovana trailhead (an 80-mile drive northwest of Fairbanks). Hike, ski, or fat-bike the 10 miles in (winter snowmobile shuttles are sometimes available). Cabins are simple wood-stove structures with the outdoor tubs adjacent. No services beyond the tubs and cabin — pack all food, fuel, and emergency communication gear. Cell signal is zero; bring a satellite communicator. Aurora visible most clear winter nights.
